L'analyste des relations internationales, le conseiller de politique étrangère ou le citoyen curieux se posent quotidiennement la question de l'action rationnelle. Le présent numéro se propose de revisiter les débats liés à la théorie du choix rationnel tel qu'il est appliqué en relations internationales.
What happened during those 13 fateful days of October 1962 when the American and Soviet governments got involved in the most dangerous nuclear stalemate of the cold war ? Why did the member states of NATO decide to launch an air campaign against the Serb forces last March ? What was Pakistan looking for in its confrontation with India ? What aims are the Colombian guerrillas pursuing ? The analysts of international relations, the foreign policy advisor or the dissatisfied citizen have all the same interrogation on rational choice on a daily basis. This issue suggests to reflect upon the debates surrounding the theory of rational choice as it is used in international relations. The first article is the translation of a chapter dedicated to rational choice in the new edition of Graham Allison's and Philip Zelikow's Essence of Decision. It represents the most complete and most recent overview of what is at stake in rational choice, when applied to international relations.
